When it rains, stormwater runoff washes excess nutrients, chemicals, and dirt from impervious surfaces, such as buildings, roads, and parking lots into storm drains which convey stormwater to local waters and the Chesapeake Bay. Excess stormwater runoff can also flood local communities, scour sediment from waterways, and degrade the health of stream systems.
In 1972, the United States established the Clean Water Act with the goal to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation's waters by preventing, reducing, and eliminating pollution. Throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, State and federal regulations were established to control pollution to local waterways through stormwater.
The Town of Smithsburg does its part to protect local streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay from pollution in stormwater by complying with its Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit. Explore the tabs below to learn more about the MS4 permit program and how you can get involved in protecting and improving local water quality!
